Kotsiubynskyi: Between Cinema and Literature
«This year marks the 160th anniversary of Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi’s birth. It was on his novella that Serhii Paradzhanov based his 1964 film Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, a work that greatly influenced cinema in Ukraine and worldwide. Kotsiubynskyi’s prose, with its attention to the Ukrainian way of life and local atmosphere, impressionistic style, textual montage, subtle psychological analysis and existentialism, seemed ahead of its time and itself cinematic. Unsurprisingly, the writer’s works were made into a number of films, starting in 1927».
